Anywhere from 1.5" to 2.5" diameter is fine. The important thing is that the back of the suction cup has similar groove socket (see arrow) to what is shown here. You can even buy these from a seller on ebay selling suction cups if you do not have an old feeder to take it off of or something else around the house.
