10 Awesome Facts About the Brontosaurus!
1.) Discovered in 1879, the Brontosaurus was
so similar to the Apatosaurus that scientists
decided to treat them as two different species
of the same genus, so it was renamed
Apatosaurus excelsus in 1903
2.) But the Brontosaurus is BACK! In 2015,
Oxford University scientists have ruled
that Brontosaurus is unique and should
have its own genus.
3.) Which is great, because Brontosaurus
means "thunder lizard," in Greek... Much
better than Apatosaurus which means
"deceptive lizard," in Greek.
4.) The naming kerfuffle was a small part of
the Bone Wars: a period of competitive fossil
hunting and discovery, marked by a heated
rivalry between Edward Drinker Cope and
Othniel Charles Marsh.
5.) Brontosaurus stood approximately 15
feet high at the hips, and had a length of
about 90 feet. These dinosaurs could reach
massive sizes, weighing approximate 33 tons
on average.
6.) According to studies, it only took a
Brontosaurus around 10 years to fully reach
this massive size.
7.) Brontosaurus had long whip-like tails that
counter balanced their long necks. It's
believed the Brontosaurus's tail was used as a
weapon to ward off predators.
8.) The tail of the Brontosaurus was like a
bull whip. By "cracking" its tail like a
bull-whip, this creature could produce a
cracking sound that was over 200 decibels, or
louder than the firing of a cannon.
9.) Despite its massive size, Brontosaurus are
herbivores that lived entirely off of plants.
10.) The Brontosaurus was alive in the late
Jurassic Period.
